Default 1 small step for man........

So, I've been off my bcp since April. Over the moon that af finally came to visit. This is normal to most people but I couldn't help grinning all day. It's such a small step but there's hope that my chances for ttc are vastly improved. Let's hope I can prove my old doc wrong - who told me at 15 I wouldn't have kids because of PCOS!
Nice feeling for a Thursday nite!

Lol I never thought I'd be saying this, but CONGRATS ON YOUR AF!!!! I wish you the best of luck! Next month will mark an entire year of no AF for me, not even spotting, so I've been really nervous about our ability to conceive. It's been 1.5 years of trying now, but only 2 weeks on Metformin. We will beat this!

Thanks Aleighkatt. Unfortunately my excitement for AF was short lived - turned out it was only some spotting! What a downer!! Still I can't moan if you've been a year without anything. It can be so depressing at times especially since so many people I know seem to be pregnant or having babies at the moment!!

Hope things go ok for you. My doc won't give me Metformin yet because I've only been off the pill and ttc since April so I've got some waiting to do! Still, I'm on countdown for that - only 5 months to go!!! I've had a couple of friends get pregnant after using Metformin so fingers crossed you have some luck. It'd be a nice Christmas surprise!!

Bummer! Well at least you got something :]
I know exactly what you mean about everyone around you getting pregnant, I know two people who got pregnant with one "accident". It's frustrating! Were you diagnosed with PCOS at 15? I just got diagnosed last month, but even before I was the doctor wanted to get my AF back. Did you have AF on the pill, and are you taking anything right now to try to get it?

I wasn't diagnosed as such but because I had really erratic periods (some lasted for 3 weeks, others for 2 days), my cycle was completely random, was overweight, had more facial hair than most girls my age, my family doctor told me I had PCOS. I've never had any official diagnosis - I'm trying to get my current doctor to do all the tests and stuff now!! Unfortunately, my doctor isn't that proactive and despite my whingeing he doesn't really do anything. He's said that because I was on the pill for so long it can take ages for AF to come and so he's said to let nature do its thing and wait for AF to appear. Get this: I have to wait until I've been off the pill for a YEAR until he'll do anything! Some of the girls on here have told me I need to think about changing docs so I'm looking into that now!

What's your doctor doing for you - you getting any medication??

xx

Wow, that's really frustrating! Your doctor shouldn't wait a year to test you for PCOS, but most doctors will have you try to get pregnant on your own for a year before they will put you on anything to help. My neighbor had the same problem, no one would test her because she had a child already and hadn't been trying for quite a year. She switched doctors and told the new one she'd been trying for a year and he started testing immediately.
I went in just to find out why I wasn't having periods and if I would be able to get pregnant, and after 4 months of tests and appointments was finally diagnosed and put on Metformin. I suspected PCOS because I gained 60lbs without changing my lifestyle/eating habits and I also have thicker/darker hair on my chin and lip (ugh). The metformin has been wonderful so far, I haven't even been on it for a month and my face is clearing up, and the weight is finally coming off. (I was doing 20+ miles on the track every week with a diet change and not losing a pound).
My doctor is having me try the Metformin alone for three months, and if I don't get pregnant then I'm starting Clomid in the beginning of January.

How long have you been off the b/c for?

Yeah it is frustrating but it seems such a common theme on here that doctors aren't very receptive to the problems we go through! I also asked my doctor for something to help with my facial hair and he said that beauty treatments were the best!! Luckily I'm quite fair so it's not too bad but that's not the point. It's down to my hormones that I've got the problem so surely there is something better than beauty treatments!!!!

Sounds like Metformin is going really well although I did read your posts about the side effects - sounds fairly tough. If you're seeing benefits from it already then it's an absolute bonus. Fingers crossed it works and you don't need to go on Clomid. Can't believe it's been almost a year since your AF!

I've been off b/c since mid April. I've definitely had some hormone changes and my body is telling me that it's doing something but just no AF. Being on the b/c I had really clear skin then about a month after stopping I had a real breakout of acne, just like I used to have when I went through puberty. Felt like a teen all over again!!! My skin only cleared up about 1 month ago and now it's started again!! Guess it's a good sign that I'm having some sort of cycle but it's annoying!

What country are you in? I'm in England and from what I gather on here we're not as well informed about things as some of the American ladies.

I was born in England, and while we were over there my mom was trying to figure out what was up with her AF/hair and everything, and never got any information. I'm not sure if that's because it was 20+ years ago or if she was just going to the wrong doctor. I'm in the US, in Texas. My hubby is in the military so I have a lot of options if I don't like a doctor, and a lot of my treatments are covered which is wonderful.

When I started Metformin I was feeling really nauseous, sleepy and hormonal, but now that I'm up to my full dosage my body is getting the benefits instead :]. I haven't had problems since, and I couldn't believe it when I stepped on that scale!
I'm hoping that I can convince my body to work without the Clomid, because I've read that a lot of people have horrible problems with mood swings while on it. I'm not sure how easy it will be to conceive if I'm scaring my hubby away

It's good that you're having some sort of hormonal changes, but it doesn't even seem worth it without the chance of ovulating! I'm sorry your face is breaking out-mine cleared up since I started Met, but I've been fighting minor acne since puberty. My doctor said that after my pregnancy he is putting me on meds that will stop the growth of new hair on my face, though it won't get rid of existing hair. My mom invested in a home laser hair remover, and it works very well-I use it as much as possible when I go back for vacation!
Have you decided if you're going to try a different doctor? Is yours a gyno?

I think there is a lot more information about it in America, well at least that's the feeling I get from seeing posts from others on here. Sounds like you're in a good position with doctors and like you're coping well with Metformin. My fingers are well and truly crossed that you're pregnant before needing Clomid.

Haven't made the decision about whether to move doctors yet or not. I'm still trying to suss out a doctor who has an interest in fertility issues. That way hopefully I'll start getting some results.
