I went off bcps and onto Met last August. I was on 1000mgs for 7 months with no changes in anything so my doc up my dosage to 2000mg. I tried to take the 2000mg dosage for as long as I could (3 weeks) but I was feeling extremely tired so I decided to down my dosage to 1500mg. I've been on 1500mgs for a little over 2 months now and I'm still feeling tired but it's better than the higher dose. I'm thinking maybe Met isn't the right med for me since I have not had a period in the 10 months I've been taking Met. When I was taking 1000mg I was spotting a tiny tiny bit ( a few specks here an there but no period ); since upping the dosage I have not seen anything remotely close to spotting. My blood test shows that I have extremely low estrogen (menopausal levels but my doc says I'm not menopausal yet, I'm only 27) so maybe that's why met isn't working??? can met actually lower estrogen levels???
Met hasn't done much for me in terms of unwanted hairs and acne; I can't see any difference.
Oh, I have also noticed something strange about my blood sugar. When I was on 1000mgs I had a mix of good and bad morning readings; when I upped my dosage to 1500mgs (3x with meals) my morning sugar levels are always bad. After reading up on some post here, I started taking a snack before bedtime everyday: this has reduced my blood sugar level back to the high end of normal but it's strange how 1000mgs was actually better than 1500mgs without the snack!!!
I'm soooo confused...any insights, thoughts or experience anyone?.... thanks...
I'm sorry met doesn't seem to be given you the desired effects. Have you had your testosterone levels checked at all? Met never fixed my cycles, but it did get my testosterone levels into a normal range. So that way, I knew it was working behind the scenes, even if I couldn't tell overtly.
I don't know if met could lower estrogen levels. My guess is that it wouldn't. Although PCOS is typically associated with high estrogen, some of us do have low estrogen levels. Do you know what they were before you started met? I can't really comment on the blood sugar levels; mine have always been normal, so I've never needed to test them regularly.
If met isn't working for you, you may want to consider some other insulin sensitizing meds (e.g., actos, avandia, or avandamet). I've even seen women do hormone replacement therapy for short periods (which sounds extreme, but may help w/ your estrogen levels).
Wish I could help more. Just wanted to say I never saw regular AFs, but knew met was helping b/c of my falling testosterone levels. Good luck to you!

I agree. I was on met alone for two months and saw no results. When I started taking met and actos, I saw great results. Sometimes you have to experiment to see what works best for your body.

Thanks for the reply gals... I'll ask my doc about actos or avandia.
My free testosterone is pretty much in the normal ranges (my doc didn't test normal testosterone so I don't know where the levels for that is). The only hormones that are abnormal on paper is my estrogen and prolactin but I have all the sides of excess andrgoens.
It's sooo weird; the second week I upped my Met to 1500 I had really bad hot flushes and I sorta had a red flush on my face for a week (like when you get out of a really really hot shower/sauna); I found that if I ate lots of food (big meals many times a day) I would feel a bit better. The redness is gone now but I'm eating a lot more than I use to and I don't like it very much. I thought the hot flushes might be due to my sugar dropping too low but when I test my bs, it's always fine.
I've been feeling really tired lately, brain's foggy, extremely bloated with lots of gas (some times my stomach feels up with so much gas it hurts) and a lot of time the side and lower part of my stomach just feels extremely tender to the touch(like it hurts a little when you apply pressure)...
I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle. I'm so tired of constantly trying to make times better but always ending up disappointed...
Lissa: I did ask my doc about HRT for the estrogen levels but both of my docs just told me to talk bcps and I don't do well on them.
I've been on 1500 mg of Met since October and have only Oed twice. The other months I've taken provera or prometrium to induce AF (my doc doesn't like to have me go more than 50 days without AF since we're TTC) I haven't noticed anything being different since being on the Met--except I've gained weight, but that's probably due to not working out as much ;-)
fawn - sorry, I hadn't checked this thread in a while. I've actually never had my estrogen levels tested. I've met some women around the site who have low estrogen.
