Question 1000 mg tablets in half vs. 500 mg tablets

Hi -

I recently switched from a 1000 mg metformin tablet broken in half taken at breakfast and dinner to 500 mg metformin tablet taken at breakfast and dinner. I have been surprised by side effects that I experienced when I first took met (especially gas - - embarrasing!) occuring after this change. Could there actually be a difference between breaking a 1000 mg tablet vs. taking a 500 mg tablet? These are not extended release.

Any comments, suggestions, advice appreciated.

Thanks!!

Are they XR? As far as I know the XR ones should not be broken...

Other than that, the only difference I can think of between half of a 1000mg and a whole 500 mg would be that you might lose a little bit when you cut them in half. Even with a pill slicer (or whatever the technical term is), you lose some "pill dust", KWIM?

That's all I can think of is that you were getting a little less than 500mg when you were cutting them, so your body feels like your dose has gone up, and is adjusting... Does that make sense?

When I first started taking Met my doctor started me out slowly, first by taking 250, 500, 750, 1000 then finally 1500mgs a day. So I had to cut my pills to get the correct dosage. I didn't find that it affected anything, and my doctor and pharmacist were well aware I was doing this. If your still concerned you should give your pharmacist or doctor a call.

I'm taking 1500mg/day, and to save money and time, I've been cutting my 1000mg pills in half. I haven't noticed any difference vs when I was taking a 1000mg + a 500mg pill.
