OK, what's wrong with me????? I started on 1000mg about 2 months ago. I went through the diarrhea and still have it off and on. In the past month, I've almost totally lost my appetit. My stomach hurts (nausea and just uncomfortable feeling), PLUS I have heartburn regularly.
AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
I take 500mg in the morn and 500mg at night. I've started trying to eat smaller meals throughout the day. I can't low carb on the Met.
AND I can't sleep! I've started taking Tylenol simply sleep to help me.
I NEVER had any of these problems when I was only taking 500mg! What am I doing wrong???????????????? HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn't even look and I just posted almost the same question!
I have been nauseous and I get dizzy spells and I feel a little depressed. I am taking 1500mg per day and I have only been on it for about 3 weeks. I don't have much GI problems, only on occasion.
I would also love some input from the other ladies.
Jaime

The first couple weeks of my pregnancy I lost my appetite, had diarrhea, felt nauseous and had really bad heartburn.
I was on Metformin at the time.
Just wondering...Is it possible you maybe pregnant?
If your not than sorry I can't be of any help cause except for diarrhea I don't suffer from any other side effects.
The appetite and nausea for me go hand-in-hand. It's kind of a vicious cycle -- I didn't eat because of the low appetite, then I had nausea, which made me feel like eating less, etc. What I've discovered is that I'm more nauseous if I don't eat enough with the met, so I have to force myself to eat enough at any meal, whether I feel like eating or not. Maybe you're not eating enough with your met? I also do not low carb -- I just try to "good carb," KWIM?
As far as the diarrhea -- I still get it sometimes, and I can usually pinpoint the cause (iceberg lettuce, anyone?). Sometimes its as simple as not adding some high fiber cereal in with my cherrios or granola.
I hope this helps and that you feel better soon!

It is a vicious cycle -- I have no appetite then I'm nauseous. In the past couple of days I've started eating little meals throughout the day. That seems to help a bit.
BeetleGirl -- the thought had crossed my mind. I'm too scared to go get a test...out of fear that it's going to be ((--)).

You're not doing anything wrong it's the Metformin that is disagreeing with you. Some people have no problem on it, other do. I was on 2000mg and for a year i had diarrhea on a regular basis for a week or several weeks at a time.
It also made me feel sick, and i lost my appetite, wonderful weightloss, but not the right way to go about it, and would look at my food and putting it in my mouth even made me feel sick.
went down to 1500mg which was slightly better, but my sugars were dreadful, so it was upped again, and another tablet added...
I am now on insulin and 1000mg of metformin, and i have no problems with taking just two tablets. I take my met with breakfast and at supper... occasionally i get diarrhea and i put it down to the met.. but its much better than before.

I don't know whether or not you have experienced nausea and changes in appetite and sleep pattern due to hormonal fluctuations before you were on Met, but these types of symptoms are fairly common when hormonal changes are going on, and that's just what the Met is supposed to cause. It should not go on like this forever, so don't worry- there is an end in sight- but don't give up yet, while your dosages are still being adjusted. It does take some time. I know how bothersome these symptoms can be-- i have often experienced them myself-- though, so ((hugs))
if you're taking your med with enough food and avoiding things that tend to cause problems with Met (generally high-carb or high-fat foods), and the GI effects continue, you might want to talk to your doctor about them.
I also wanted to mention that restless sleep or an inability to sleep/nausea can be signs of hypoglycemia. So try eating a snack before bed with some carb and protien in it and see if it helps.
If it isn't hypo and it is the meds, it does pass in time for most of us. Talk to your Dr about dosing up slowly and staying at your current dose until you tolerate it better. I would even ask him about dropping to 500 in the am and 250 in the evening and see if that helps. often dosing up slower seems to bypass more of the cruddy side effects.
Take care.

THANKS everyone for the help! I have started eating smaller meals every few hours, plus something before I go to bed. That has been helping. I still get the effects, but it's not every day .

I wonder if jumping straight to 1000mg is the problem, my Doctor started me on 500mg every day for the first two weeks then up to 1000mg for the following two weeks and I had a slight upset tummy in the first week but apart from that its been a smooth transition. I am now on the second week of the 1000mg and go up to 1500mg after this and stay on that dose.
My Doctor insisted to start low and work up to the full dose to avoid as much of the side effects as possible and I have found it all ok.
Maybe I am just lucky, but I just thought I would mention as it may be worth discussing with your Dr the possibility of reducing down and starting off on smaller steps letting your body adjust slowly.
