He told me that only about 6% of people who diet can lose the weight on their own. This statistic depressed me since last wednesday...
I'd get another doctor.
That stat is idiotic.
6% of what subset? 6% of people who actually workout 5x per week and eat a healthy, reduced calorie diet?
Keep in mind gastric bypass isn't 'magic'...the people who are successful at it, exercise and eat right. Those who don't exercise and eat right gain the weight back (Did he mention that stat?)
You get a high-five from me. I needed a little boost and pick me up and your inspirational story gave me just what I needed. Keep up that great work and LOOK AT THOSE LEGS MISSY!!!! Hot stuff!
Thanks Kat I needed to hear that... now that I've had some time to digest what was said, it almost sounds like he was being a scumbag doctor and promoting a colleague for business purposes.

I am sitting here at almost midnight reading what I think is the kick in the ass I need. I am totally inspired by your story. My children are 4 and 16 months and I always said that I would lose the weight after I am done having babies. Well I have tried numerous times to lose weight and keep failing. My Dh and I joined the YMCA in January and I was going 4x a week, eating well and seeing some results. I started at 215lbs and have been stuck at 205lbs since April. I went down to 201lbs and was so excited because I just wanted to be under 200lbs. Then one thing led to another and I am doing nothing now. I eat too much, too often and especially at night around 9pm I get hungry. What to do? I can't afford to do NS right now but I need to do something. I wrote down the Oprah quote "Nothing tastes as good as thin feels" and I am going to put everywhere there is food in my house. I hope your story can once again give me the push I need to succeed once and for all.
THANK YOU

shllss, KaylaCakes, vanboingy, Rener, maritza211 -- thanks so much to all of you for your compliments More importantly, though, know that losing weight with PCOS CAN be done through diet and exercise. It means a lot to me to hear that I've inspired you in some way -- I spent a lot of time thinking it was impossible and still spend a lot of time in disbelief even though I'm living proof that it IS possible! For me, though, losing weight meant changing everything for good and it took me many many years to gather up the strength to do that. These boards are an excellent source of inspiration - I've spent a lot of time here along the way (usually at moments of weakness - the support from this was much better than any I ever got from Ben & Jerry's). I wish you all the best success as you move toward your goals - you deserve to be where you dream to be! And don't hesitate to ask any questions you might have along the way, too

I lost weight pretty consistently over the course of about a year - during which time I also actually (shockingly!) started to like working out. At first I was using an elliptical machine (which I found to be a nice intermediate between walking and running) daily and doing a little bit of work with some free weights. I added in some tennis and bicycling as the weather got warmer. After losing about 45 pounds I started, of all things, running. (this, I must add, has been the hugest shock of the whole thing - I could NEVER run a mile, even as a kid, or come close, for that matter. I had told myself that I couldn't run. It was my roommate being afraid to run alone that got me started. It was rough at first, I won't lie...it hurt! But I kept moving forward with it slowly and worked my way up to a 5k - it's now my favorite thing in the world to do and sometimes I go for 6 or 7 miles at a time). For me, running and increasing my weightlifting were what really changed how my body looked -- things retracted and I really got a whole new shape. Splitting up my exercise throughout the day also helped me to continue to lose - walking to and from work aided with that in addition to the running and lifting.

You're welcome! It really sounds like you've been on the right track with exercise; have you been watching your diet, too? Nutrisystem is based on the glycemic index and spacing smaller meals more often throughout the day (on the plan I eat 5 times a day, sometimes 6 depending on my degree of exercise). There are people who follow the principles of the plan without actually buying the food (you can even join their web site and find a lot of information about how to do it there). I found that through eating smaller amounts more frequently (and always being prepared with healthy snacks when I'm out and about!) it prevented me from getting overly hungry. It's tough at first, I know (man, do I know!!), especially at night, but just think about how great you'll feel laying in bed knowing that you've made it one more day with healthy choices and know you're that much closer to your goal

Julia-Thanks for the compliment of my boys. We do think they are quite cute. Yesterday I went to the grocery store and bought a ton of fruit and veggies. I ate really well yesterday and will try to continue everyday. I told alot of my friends about you and the inspiration you have given to me to know that this can happen for me too.
Thank You

Thanks!!
I remember going to the doctor a few years ago and getting convinced by what she was telling me that it was impossible to lose the weight through diet and exercise. It took me a long time to change my mindset and to gather up the determination to do it. Quite possibly, it's been the most challenging and life-changing thing I've done in my life so far (no kids yet!). I think lately it's been sinking in for me just how different every aspect of my life is. It sometimes brings me down a little bit to think about how I used to get treated when I was overweight (even a little mad at times), but I know that I'll never be that way again. Plus, I will admit, as shallow as it sounds, nothing (I mean, nothing) beats going to a busy beach in a bikini and not dreading that walk from my towel to the waves. Good luck to you and I know you can do it. As cliche as it sounds, if I can, anyone here can!!

Excellent!! You have no idea how much it means to me to hear that I'm an inspiration. Know that with the right mindset you can do it, too! I hope you find a 'sweet spot' (no pun intended) in your diet/exercise program. For me, diet-wise, a huge part has been protein -- I eat a lot of eggs (nothing fills me up like a veggie omelet in the morning) and low-fat dairy items like yogurt. I also like to snack on Special K Protein Plus cereal - it's pretty tasty and the serving with milk is really filling. And don't forget to drink lots of water! And, of course, don't hesitate to ask me any questions/share anything along the way - I'd love to hear how you're doing!

Sounds like a great workout! I've been thinking about getting DDR for the winter months. Keep up the great work!!
