I'm a mother of a 12 year old just diagnosed with pcos. I myself was diagnosed when I was 18 so I pretty much diagnosed her myself but took her to a gyn for confirmation. She is IR and started taking Metformin ER 500 two days ago. Is there anyone out there that has a child that is going through this same thing? I was never treated with Metformin I took clomid 150 for 7 mos to concieve her and 150 mg for 4 mos. to concieve my son (8 yrs). Even on a low carb diet I was not able to lose the weight I wanted to and I am thinking of asking for metformin. Any advice for me to help me monitor my child?
I also don't have any answers for you, but wanted to wish you and your daughter lots of luck. I think it's great that she was diagnosed so early, so hopefully getting all of the symptoms in control at a young age, she can avoid the more serious problems later in life.

I am glad that your daughter has a good doctor. My niece was diagnosed and doctor wants to wait and see....?
I would also ask to test testosterone levels. Mine were elevated. They did come down some with Metformin but I was still having the hair issues.
I am not insulin resistant, but Metformin has worked wonders for me: stopped rapid unexplained weight gains, started having periods, cleared acne, etc...
It just didn't help the hair issues. (Hair loss and facial hair growth.) I needed anti androgens for that. (Sprionolactone and Flutamide)
I've been on Metformin for over three years, I have occasional stomach upset but nothing major.

Just want to add myself to this thread. I have a ten year old who I think is a prime candidate for PCOS...would love to know if you can prevent some of the damage, emotional and otherwise by catching this early. What made you suspect PCOS in your daughter? My DD has too much hair (arms, legs, some on back, some signs of pubic hair), is a sugar junkie, highly explosive personality...she has lots of good qualities, though, and I love her alot.
I just wanted to stop in and say hi. Your daughter is so fortunate that you are aware and she was diagnosed young.
I was 15 when I was diagnosed and had a really hard time staying on my meds. My doctor gave me bcp's and they just made me sick. As far as I knew, the worst thing that happened to me if I didn't take them was I didn't get my period (which didn't seem like such a bad thing to me) so I didn't take them.
My only advice would be to make sure she understands why she is treating this now. Her prognosis is so much better if her levels are normal while she is still developing (throughout puberty) than if it isn't treated until she is older. Especially if the treatments make her feel worse, it's helpful to understand.
Good luck,
Tori

My daughter started out with what I would consider a whole lot of pubic hair for an 8 year old. Steadily in the next years to follow she developed a lot of abdominal hair, similar to what you would see in an adolescent boy, growing all the way up past her navel. Her periods have never been right she has what I would consider "oppisite" effect. She will bleed all the way through the month sporadically but will have what we call her "real" period occasionally (heavier bleeding). I would go for months without a period. It seems that most everyone has the same problem I have . She also has the thick dark ring around her neck and very dark armpits. She had some blood work but no results yet. Her gyn says she has classic symptoms and with my history, wanted to go ahead and start treating her so that maybe when she does want to have children (hopefully in the very distant future) she will not have the difficulty concieving that I did. Her gyn did not do a pelvic exam, but I did have her prepared for that in case that it did happen. My wish for her is that she can just get the help that she needs early and can carry on a normal fertile life. I hope that you can take this information and read everything else that you can get your hands on concerning pcos and get your daughter diagnosed!
hi jmd1 - i just made an appt with my endo for my 13 yr old. she is a mini-me with her symptoms and just got her first period yesterday. her appt is in april. when i first discussed my daughter with my endo (when she was taking my history), she said that she wanted to wait until she got her period and then would see her. she spoke of putting her on metformin, too! i'm just happy that maybe i can help prevent her from having the issues i've had to deal with. i've been researching the yasmin BCP but i'm a little nervous about putting her on it although it seems like a medication.
i also have a 14 yr old daughter that shows no physical signs of having pcos so i'm unsure if i should have her looked at or not. she gets her period every 28 days with the exception of a few times it stopped and then started up again. she has some upper lip hair, but we think that might just be because her dad has armenian heritage and his very hairy.
My daughter just turned 14 and has been on Met for 4 months. It seemed like it was starting to work, but then I got the feeling that it had lost it's effectiveness. We had her insulin rechecked, and sure enough it was up again. So we've increased it from 1000mg to 1500mg.

Y I'll love you forever; I'll like you for always;
As long as I'm living, my babies you'll be.
My six year daughter has exaggerated adrenarche. (Those dreaded androgens!!) She has had slight pubic hair since she was 4 years old. She has had numerous appointments with her endo but we are told the best course of action is to make sure she has a good diet and wait and see. Recently she has started craving food. No sooner is she finished dinner than she is asking for something to eat. It is very hard to say no especially when she cries and says she is hungry. I know what those cravings are like! I myself take metformin and it has been a godsend. I have researched it in the treatment of exaggerated adrenarche (a precursor for pcos) and it can help to stop pcos developing. It can delay the onset of menstration while helping to main the height of the child. I have so much info and am so frustrated that doctors in the uk refuse to treat this condition. I think you are doing the best thing possible for your daughter by at least trying this medication.
This food craving sounds like my daughter too. I'll give her a big dinner but she'll still want to eat two hours later. If we go out and do something active, I'll always take a snack because she'll be hungry (starving) before anyone else. We are working on getting her to eat better, apples instead of candy!, but it's an uphill climb. She really seems to need and want the sugar buzz. I've talked to the pediatrician about this, and even had her checked by a child's endo a few years ago, but no one is doing anything. My DD is not fat, she's very very active. But I wonder what's going to happen at puberty. Do young children who are diabetic get Met? Wish there was more research and knowledge about PCOS! I feel like we are the lab rats...
I have been in email contact with a lady in america, she also has a six year old daughter with the same symptoms as my daughter. She told me that her daughter was prescribed metformin and it has made such a difference. The cravings are gone and she is much happier. Unlike my daughter's doctors, who say it's not life threatning so we will do nothing, this lady's doctor realises the importance of catching it early. They consider such things as self esteem, the emotional symptoms as well as the physical. I am hoping to have another appointment with my daughter's endo in the next few weeks where I will again raise these issues. I'm hoping the fact that she now has to take a day or two off school every month with crippling headaches will make them think that action is now needed.
Recently she has started craving food. No sooner is she finished dinner than she is asking for something to eat. It is very hard to say no especially when she cries and says she is hungry.
My daughter was this way from a very early age as well. She also had a FULL amount of pubic hair by the time she was in 2nd grade. Recently, my four year old SON has started with the insatiable hunger, and his appetite canNOT be cured! I actually had his insulin levels checked but they were PERFECT (2) so I have NO idea what goes on with boys..... OBVOUSLY it's not PCOS, but seeing as how the PCOS is caused by the insulin resistance (at least in our case) I can't help but wonder if he's not pre-IR.....
