Azelaic Acid(Azelex) falls in the category B durgs, meaning that it's not "expected" to harm a fetus, but they don't know for sure since they have not done any studies on humans. Plus it can be excreted in breast milk and it's a sulfur derivitave, so I wouldn't call it safe, I think it should be used only after Erythomicin failed, and at least after the first trimester, when development is most critical.
