microdermabrasion is not a waste of money =) Hi there:
I had my microdermabrasion done BY a dermatologist. I definitely thought it was not a waste of money! I have seen pictures of amazing results (scars completely gone) for women who got a lot of treatments, like 15 or 20, over a period of a year or so.
I only had 5 treatments. They're much cheaper than laser treatments or surgeries which cost thousands of dollars, so for me it made a lot of sense to start getting a few treatments and make gradual progress over time. Plus each time I got it done, my skin would look great, glowing and radiant and beautiful afterwards. But when I began microdermabrasion, my skin was quite clear and I was just tackling scars at that point. If acne is very active, I don't know how microdermabrasion would work for someone.
But I'm thrilled I spent my money on it! It was a great choice and I will probably do it again later this year when I expect to have more money coming in.
The effects of microdermabrasion are not going to make scars look very different in one treatment, unlike a laser, but it's only $100! And the overall beauty effects were a bonus, since my primary reason was to work on the scars. My scars did diminish after 5 treatments, but did not vanish. I think I would need another 10 or 15 treatments to wipe them completely, which I'll eventually do over the next few years probably.
IMPORTANT: Microdermabrasion is not the same as Dermabrasion. I would NEVER get dermabrasion. Dermabrasion is a horrible, painful surgery with bleeding, scaling, etc....and I've never seen anyone get good results from it. It's a bigger risk; it's painful, it's awful! It's expensive, and during healing for WEEKS it makes your face raw and red and oozing ......And it can CAUSE scars! I would never get that done in a million years. A lot of doctors still promote that and talk about how great it is but I have known a couple of people who had it, went through hell, and barely got any results. It seems to me like that's being phased out now, because even the most harsh laser treatments are better than that in terms of benefits for sacrifice.
Microdermabrasion is not painful! It feels good, slightly scratchy like a cat's tongue licking you, kind of funny feeling, that's all. You're in an and out of the doc office in an hour, voila!
Good luck to all!
