Basically it is the same drug (metformin hydrochloride), just with a different property that helps it to break down gradually for longer dosing. Different drug companies use different pill-making technology to help it dose slowly, and they distinguish them all by name.

Fortamet is not an AB-rated generic to Glucophage XR, due to differences in the sustained release properties of the tablets.
