Unhappy a little lost...mostly frustrated

I am new to this forum and was just diagnosed with PCOS in 2005. It certainly explains a lot of past and present symptoms. I am hoping someone can listen to my story and give me some guidance.
I am 32 years old. I had a bra by 9 and a period by 10. I was fully developed early, am only 5’2” and am just over where I should be on the BMI. I had my first child in ‘96 and was diagnosed gestational diabetic, but they didn’t know as much then as they do now, so they just told me to cut out sugar. I had a healthy boy and then in ’98 got pregnant again…and again was mildly gestational. I was fortunate enough to have a healthy girl. Over the last few years, I was developing hair on my face, lower abdomen and breasts and also my hair on my head was thinning. It was embarrassing and I didn’t know why so I did nothing. I was also slowly gaining weight around my middle and just attributed it to a lazy diet and being shorter then average women.
Then in September 2005 I got pregnant again. This time I was in a new city and told my new ob/gyn. my past history and she got my b. sugars tested and sent me to an endocrinologist right away. During my pregnancy, I was watching my sugars and was temporarily on insulin to counteract the amount the baby was using. The endocrinologist at this point, diagnosed me with PCOS and Insulin Resistance. Near the end of my pregnancy, she ordered a test checking triglycerides and prescribed Avandia for IR. Unfortunately, due to the timing of my baby’s birth, the results went to my regular GP.
Being in Canada, we have universal Medicare which is great sometimes, but also means you can’t just change doctors…and unfortunately, my GP just wants you in and out…no time for chit chat! It feels like he just treats symptoms, not diseases as a whole. When I was in his office, I didn’t even get a chance to confirm if he was aware of the diagnosis of PCOS, he just put me on Crestor for slightly elevated triglycerides. In fact, years ago I went to him when my period was 3 months late and he said “I have seen lots of women who haven’t had their period in over 6 months. This is normal. Don’t worry about it.” I knew that couldn’t be true! My miracle son is 11 months old now and this is where I am at in this point of my pcos.
Can anyone explain why when I was pregnant I was dropping lbs. like crazy and now I am eating the same foods and exercising more than 30 minutes every day – but I can’t lose the weight? My research has shown that Metphormin is having better success in controlling IR and helping with weight loss, so I am debating switching. Also, should I be on something to try to balance my hormones? My GP seems ignorant of my pcos as I was diagnosed when pregnant and all records went from the specialist to my ob/gyn.
I am sorry this is so long, but I think it is because I felt so alone and had no one to ask. Please help me get my life back and weight down. I am tired of feeling low about myself.
