Default metformin and metabolic acidosis

hi ladies,

just a question... i have been on several medications, including metformin 500 mg once daily and 200 mg aldactone once daily and diane-35 once daily for a while now (the first two for a couple of years and the diane-35 for approximately 8 months.) i had some routine labwork drawn and my md just called me concerned that my serum bicarbonate had dropped to 18 (24-28 is the normal reference range). he wants me to d/c the met and have the labs repeated in a month or two. i've been having some malaise and stomach problems, which are all symptoms of metabolic acidosis...

my question is have any of you encountered this? i know it is pretty rare. all of my other labs were perfectly normal; glucose 78, cholesterol was good, kidney function was normal, liver function normal... everything was fine except for the bicarb. i don't drink alcohol b/c of the meds i am on and i really don't have any other the risk factors. i have been cross-checking my other meds for symptoms of acidosis, but so far am coming up with nothing except that diuretics might potentially increase the likelihood (aldactone) but the metformin is the likely culprit...
