I had high prolactin. First they tested me for a tumor of the pituitary gland. If you have one of these adenomas, it can generally be treated with medication. I did not have a pituitary adenoma, so from there they deduced PCOS. I think I also had marginally high testosterone.
During that time when my periods were wacky and my prolactin was high, I also had sore breasts quite a bit, but I never had a milky discharge. So I can't say if the nipple or areola changed. Mine did not. Just that my breasts had increased in size and they often hurt.
But since losing weight and my prolactin being back in the "normal" range, I haven't had the pain (except during pms).
