I think the problem is once you have breakthrough bleeding, it's not going to stop until you have a period. I'm not sure you should stop the active pills for spotting, but if you get a full blown period in the middle of the pack, stopping the active pills will trigger the withdrawal bleed, and hopefully the next cycle your body will adjust.
I finally stopped bleeding a couple of days into the 2nd pack, but I spotted for two or three more days. I've got about a week and a half left on the 2nd pack, and for now everything is working perfectly. Other than the slightly irregular bleeding, I've had no side effects so far.
