Do you have problems with irregular periods and weight? If so, you may have a condition called polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This disorder is related to a problem with blood sugar control and may increase the risk of diabetes. We are investigating whether a natural substance, cinnamon, may be beneficial in improving blood sugar control and menstrual cycle regularity in women with PCOS. The study requires eight physician visits in Manhattan over 6 months and includes free physical exam, pelvic ultrasound, and laboratory assessment of insulin resistance. Participants should have had less than 2 periods in the last 6 months and not be on birth control pills or metformin (Glucophage) for at least 1 month prior to starting the study. Qualified participants will be compensated $150. If you or a family member are between the ages of 18 to 35 and want to participate in the study, please call Columbia University Medical Center (212) 305-6337. The follow-up trial we are conducting is a randomized, placebo-controlled, double blinded study on the use of oral cinnamon extract to improve menstrual regularity and to reduce insulin resistance in PCOS over a 6-month period. Unfortunately the study is only based at Columbia and participants will have to be make 8 visits to the office over the study period. For logistical reasons, interested study participants should be from the local area and can contact me, Jeff directly by email @
