Hi girls,
I was on met when I got pg with my DD Calli, so my OB wanted to take me off of it after the first trimester. I stopped taking it at 12 weeks and he had me take the 1 hr at 13 weeks. I failed, so I took the 3 hr test and failed it also. My OB immediately put me on glyburide, he said that it would either work for me or not and that it worked for about 60% of the people on it, but if it did work it was better for the baby because it doesn't cross the placenta. It worked for me. My OB then had me see a perinatal GD specialist at our perinatal center. They set down with me, showed me how to use a glucose meter and told me everything I should watch for. I had to keep track of what I ate and check my blood sugars 4 times a day. After a couple of weeks and figuring out what I could eat, I only had to check my sugars 3 days a week. With the glyburide (that was just one pill a day at bed time) I didn't have to be too strict with my diet only a couple of things sent my sugars soaring and once I figured out what they were and avoided them I could pretty much have what I wanted.
There are some good things that come from having GD (If you want to look at the bright side) I got to see my DD twice a week on u/s when they would do a BPP and I got to listen to that beautiful HB twice a week when they did a non-stress test. After so many u/s there was no doubt it was a girl!
I developed pre-e at about 32 weeks and was put on bed rest. At 36 weeks my BP was a concern so they induced and I had a beautiful Baby girl who weighed in at 5lbs 15 oz. She was a petite little angel. The GD didn't affect her weight at all and since the glyburide didn't cross the placenta and my sugars stayed under control it was as if she were born to someone without GD. They did give her some formula right after birth to maintain her sugars and checked her for 24 hours after she was born but she had no problems at all.
I'm pregnant now and I know that starting 12 weeks when I stop taking the met I'll be back onto the GD routine. I'm not worried at all this time, I hope the Glyburide works as well for me this time and I won't have to take insulin but if I do that will be ok also, it'll just take some getting used to and the end result is SOOOOOOOOOOO worth it. The pre-e was much more inconvienient than the GD, for me anyway. If you have any questions or anything for me just pm me. GOOD LUCK!
