It could be related to hormones (estrogen?). Maybe when you're on progesterone, it improves your insulin resistance. You might see more improvement if you just started progesterone. You might want to try milk thistle, since not only does it help the liver function better (and glucose), but helps the liver get rid of excess estrogen. I also find that if I eat a high potassium food in the morning if my glucose is high'ish' it will lower it within an hour, and before going to bed it improves my fasting glucose. But
I think when I go to from a strict diet to falling off, it's a shock to the system. It may be the same way for you too. If I'm off the diet for a few days, my body seems to adjust. When you go off, try to fit in as many veg(especially) & fruit as you can, no matter how bad you've been.
Oh, and the milk thistle didn't affect my cycle. The OV watch was off. Got my LH surge today. I was taking 5 caps a day (2 morn/1 afternoon/2 evening).
