Default I'm confused about managing diabetes

I developed diabetes during my pregnancy. My OB said that it is type 2 since I developed it so early and I was on such large amounts of insulin. I am now 3 weeks postpartum.
I am very motivated to get this weight off and get on a good diet and exercise. I told myself that if I can eat such a strict diet when pregnant and control it, then I can do this! So I made an appointment with my endocrinologist. I told her my plan for diet, exercise, and weight loss. She said that I can do that and my numbers will come down some but the diabetes will never go away. I always thought that you could diet and lose weight enough to where your levels are in the normal range? What she said to me REALLY discouraged me.
I am 3 weeks postpartum and my levels are in the diabetic range but on the lower end. She said that at 6 weeks postpartum they will probably get higher and I will need to go on Byetta and metformin. And that the diet and exercise will lower it some but I will always be diabetic.
I told my midwife today that I am planning on losing weight and she said great that way you might not be diabetic next time you are pregnant. I told her my endo said it will never go away.
Who is right? Can I lose weight to make it go away or to at least make it look like it's gone away?
