I d/c bc Aug 2007 and went 7 months without AF on my own. I started metformin 1500 mg / day in March 2008 and had a cycyle everymonth for 3 months - then in May 2008, BFP!!!!
During march - May I also lost approx 20 lbs which I contribute to helping us conceive! Not that I am a large person (4 ft, 11 inches) but my weight had crept up to 138 lbs in March 2008 which is a little extra weight for person of my height so I really think getting back done to 118lbs helped me! THis was not through dieting but just cutting back some of my "white" food intake and replacing them with lots of veggies and fruits!
I also charted BBT(perhaps not as regulalry and consistently as I should have) but it was helpful in trying to predict OV and helped me to ensure we BD at least on the days we were most fertile! Once we got our BFP it was laos nice to be able to look back over the chart and determine when we thought we had conceived!

You mention you are struggling....I felt that way too just before the BFP! When I started the met at first i was so optimistic but when the third cycle came I had become very consumed with TTC and we still hadn;t had any success and I was beginning to feel that maybe we werent; meant to be...but that's not a road to go down. Believe me, the BFP is so worth it when it happens! And as long as you haven;t exhausted all options (including others like clomid, etc) - don't give up!

Best wishes and babydust~~~~
