My father had his kidney removed several years ago for a suspected malignant tumor. It did take several days in the hospital and then several weeks at home for recovery, but all in all he did just fine. Actually his biggest issue was constipation from the pain meds, so I would definitely be proactive about that with stool softeners, etc. Despite being an "ugly" tumor (according to the surgeon) the pathology reports all came back as a benign tumor.
This was his first major surgery in his lifetime, and with the cancer scare he did get pretty worked up in the weeks prior to the surgery. His doctor actually gave him an rx for xanax, and although he didn't need it often it was helpful for those nights right before the surgery when he had trouble relaxing and sleeping.
