Hello,
I am severely lactose intollerant. I found this out almost 8 yrs ago at the age of 21. Before I found out I could eat anything that had dairy in it (pizza, milk, ice cream etc.) Then one day out of the blue, I had pizza and ended up in severe pain and on the toilet for what seemed to be all night!
Since that very day I have stayed clear from all dairy products! I read lables, and watch for milk, cheeses, whey powder, buttter & cream.
It sucks big time, as pretty well everything has some form of dairy in it. Also watch out for 'modified milk ingredients' this is whey powder or whey protein, which is milk.
If you want 'goodies' such as cakes, cookies etc., you have to make them yourself using Lactaid Milk (which is what I use). It works great and you wouldn't even notice the difference. This milk is the only milk I buy, as soy milk is thick and chalky tasting...gross.
Apparently goats milk & cheeses do not contain milk products. I haven't tried it, as I have heard bad things about how it tastes and I don't want to be the guinea pig lol.
The key thing is to read lables. You will get used to it and it will become a natural thing for you to do.
There is also Lactaid tablets that you can take. They come in a chewable form or a pill form. I use these when going out for dinner, as most restaurants don't tell you the truth as to if their food contains dairy products. Some people will guess, but that's not good enough when you have an allergy!
Good luck to you.
