I love Echoes of His Presence which you can get used on Amazon pretty cheap most of the time. It gives a good picture of life at the time of Jesus' time on earth. Each chapter covers a different event in a Jewish person's life from weddings to festivals mixing in Biblical facts with a narrative of fictional characters and how they could have reacted during that time. From what I remember it's written by a man who has been studying in Israel Jewish culture and history.

I also recently got A Man Called Peter and a few other books by him and his wife. I loved the movie, and I hope the books are just as good or better.

DH just fininshed Praying the Book of Revelation by Towns. He said it's a great devotional book that really makes you think. He liked it so much I just bought him two more such books for Christmas including Praying the Gospels and Praying Paul's Letters.
