I use the stuff to make "everything but the kitchen sink" hamburgers - to 1.25 to 1.5 pounds of good quality ground beef, add:
2 TBL Vegemite
2 TBL Dead horse (tomato sauce - aka ketchup)
2 TBL Grain mustard
Dash Worchestire sauce
handful seasoned breadcrumbs
handful Oatmeal
1-2 grated carrot
handful grated savory cheese
dash salt
dash pepper
fresh parsely
an egg
optional: 1/2 diced onion, raw or grilled (I like red onion)
Mix together, divide into patties, cook as usual. Unlike "straight" ground beef, this mixture will not shrink up much - you'll want to form your patties pretty much the shape and size that you want them to be when done cooking.
It makes really juicy, flavorful burgers.
You can use the same mixture for meatloaf - though I tend to put a "tunnel" of extra grated cheese down the center of the loaf, and brush the entire thing with tomato sauce. |
So... maybe they don't put exp. dates on jars for export out of fear they won't sell fast enough... or maybe mine is just so old it predates them using dates, LOL
That recipe is similar to the one I followed for the meat loaf. Only thing is I tried to print it and the printer wasn't working, so by the time I got downstairs I forgot about the cheese... then while I was mixing things up my son locked one of the babies in the bathroom and I forgot about the carrot in that fiasco. Will remember those two next time, might add mustard, too.
Probably wouldn't like it as burgers, though - I like my burgers bland! DH used to put thyme in them until I finally got him to stop, LOL
