My hearts breaks that you and your family had to go through that! I was with my grandfather when he passed in 2001, and stayed with my grandma for days of hospice when she was dying last year. With my grandpa we did home hospice (basically a nurse came once a day, the rest was up to the family). It was horribly traumatic for all of us. He lived 24 days without food and 17 days without water (too sick to eat or drink), and was in and out of consciousness for days. It was literally one of the worst experiences of my life. Then, last December, just before Christmas, my grandma got sick. She was admitted to the hospital and continued to deteriorate. She made the choice to not be hooked to a vent, so she was moved to hospice (in hospital). They were wonderful to our family and it was better than being at home. But, it was still long and drawn out. The doctor said she would live a day or two at most, and she ended up living several days, finally passing 1/1/08. I left and went home at 430AM because I couldn't take anymore, and she passed at 8AM.
Going through that changes who you are, I think. You and your siblings are in my thoughts and prayers!
