Beans. Way cheap. Way healthy. Lots of protein and fiber. The perfect food. Cook a lot of beans ahead of time and stick them in the fridge. Add them to salads for protein, process them for dip, saute a few veggies for a healthy side dish. My default 'cheap' meal is Ham and Beans. It costs about 2.00 to make and will feed a crowd. Just one bag of navy beans (or any other kind!) and a smoked hamhock. Follow directions on bag o' beans, add salt and pepper, and the hamhock during cooking. :-)
Soups are pretty inexpensive in the long run because you can have leftovers. A big pot of soup can last my husband and I a whole week.
Our biggest money sucker is produce. We always get the our mainstays: celery, carrots, onions, and apples. In addition to that, just get one type of fruit/veggie from each group: Get 1 kind of berry, greens (don't get spinach and greenleaf, just pick 1), pepper, and citrus... just make sure you have a variety of colors so you can cover all your nutrition bases. I love variety so I tend to get 4 kinds of greens, 3 citrus, all the berries I can, LOL.... it ends up to be a lot of money.
Whole wheat Kangaroo Pita Pockets are great item, and really cheap. We haven't had them here in a while, but 1/2 a pita would go great with some lean turkey slices, lettuce, & cucumber. It is a good replacement for bread.
