Paid time depends on the policies of your company. All FMLA does is ensure that if your workplace is of a certain size, you may take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave without losing your job. There are no laws in the United States that guarantee any kind of paid maternity leave. I work for the federal government, and I was able to take several months off at full pay, but that's because I had been banking it up for many, many years, and the federal government (or at least my agency) allows you to use up to 6-8 weeks of sick leave (banked, not provided if you don't have it saved up) to recover from childbirth. They do not grant any additional paid time related to maternity/adoption. Sadly, your situation is pretty typical.
