Hi Tigger and other ladies,
I am sorry that you had such an awful experience. It is terrible, you wait so long for the appt in the first place and then all they do is insult you and waste your time when you get there.
I was dx with PCOS 2 years ago after TTC x 1 year. When my gp referred me to the gynae there was a 6 month wait, so I decided to pay for a private consult. I arrived with all my blood results and US results, so had my dx spelled out for him .... and after he insisted on doing and internal exam (for what I don't know), he told me that we should just wait and see what happens. I told him that this was not good enough, and that I wasn't leaving until we had a plan of action. He fobbed me off by saying that he would call me the next day and he wanted me to see one of his colleagues .... now all I wanted was a prescription for metformin .... so I was not happy. Anyway to cut a long story short, I went out, sat in the car and cried. Then I went home and told DH what had happened ... he was as angry as I was, and then I never heard from the consultant regarding seeing his colleague.
So I wrote a letter summarising the entire consultation and hand delivered it to his secretary and sent another copy to the hospital. Two weeks later I received a phone call at 8pm while out walking with friends from the 'evil' consultant, he thought that I was very unreasonable expecting him to get back to me sooner. He made no excuses for his conduct, and I told him that I had made alternative arrangements and hoped that I never crossed paths with him again ... I also refused to pay him, which did not seem to worry him at all. I have also made a point of telling lots of people about how badly I was treated by him, so hopefully that has done some damage to his private obstetrics business!
It turns out it was the best thing I ever did. I then went about getting referred to see an endocrinologist rather than a gynae. I found a guy with a special interest in weight management, including PCOS. He was brilliant, and so reasonable about it all .... and I now have an 11 month old son.
So don't put up with anyone trying to fob you off because they are not up to date on developments in PCOS ..... get out your computer and write a letter, and let people know that you are not happy ..... and then see what other options are out there. The websites for some of the hospitals show clinics and areas of interest for some of the docs ..... or else sometimes you can see the research that they are doing and that will show you what they are interested in.
Good luck, and keep positive.
