It can happen quickly - I was 'prediabetic' for years - got lectured and lectured about my weight, useless advice when i asked for help (including many trips to a dietition who pushed the food pyramid at me - a disaster for me). I had all the classic signs of PCOS - yet went undiagnosed for TEN YEARS. Then bam - started having diabetic symptoms, complained to my doc. (new doc - moved from Canada to the US) and he did the testing - not only for diabetes, but also for PCOS (hormone levels, fasting insulin etc). N
And yep - I had JUST crossed over into diabetic ranges. so it can happen slowly, or quickly. While I was 'pre-diabetic' for years, the switch to being diabetic happened after college when I switched from biking everywhere for classes and at least a moderate amount of exercise - to a desk job and driving everywhere. :/ So the changes in exercise, combined with diet could definitely have pushed you in to diabetic ranges.
I would get the 1 hour done, but also get them to do your fasting insulin levels too.
Are you on metformin?
