I too suffer from anxiety as well as major depression. There is a term for my depression but I can't remember it. Its one that has lasted for more than 2 years with flare ups of severe depression from time to time. Anyways...I have been taking celexa with horrible side effects. And I know that treats both depression/anxiety. Before I was on wellbutrin 300mg which also treats both, as well as Buspar. Buspar is a long acting anti-anxiety medicine. It is not going to give you the quick fix of xanax but over a two week period of time you will feel your anxiety lessen. The usual dosage is anywhere between 10mg and 20mg. You will probably need the xanax for really bad flare ups in the mean time but over a period of time those will lessen with Buspar. I took it and had no side effects and loved it. I am just waiting for an appointment to go back and get a refill script. I hope this helped you some.
