Question Spironolactone... Archaic?

I've been on Spironolactone since I was a Jr. in high school and I am now 28 years old. I had one brief break from it during which I was taking prednisone, which turned me into a raging monster/lunatic. It made my mood swings HUGE and dramatic and mad me angry angry angry at the drop of the hat. I got back on Spironolactone and that calmed down, but I'm wondering if Spiro is starting to be an out of date med now. I'm interested in trying a newer med, in hopes that something will help decrease some of my symptoms. At this point, Spiro feels more like a habit than something that is showing any results. None of my doctors have ever suggested anything new, but I kind of feel like that's because they think, Eh, you're on something now...it's probably good enough.
Can anyone suggest a different med (i'm specifically interested in something to help ease my mood swings and possibly help me lose some weight) and maybe give me an idea of how to approach my dr. about this? She's a wonderful dr. and will do whatever she can to help me out, but I'd like to know in advance what kinds of blood tests or meds I should be expecting.

Spiro - i think it might be time we call it quits.
