Oh my, what bad advice you have been given. The most likely reason for them not wanting to prescribe it is the cost - Yasmin is more expensive as it is a newer pill.
I live in the UK too, and was initially prescribed Yasmin by my gynae, but have been on and off it since. I am on it now because I demanded it basically and there was no problem. Yasmin is safer than Dianette/Diane 35, with less risk of thrombosis. In fact, Dianette shouldn't be prescribed for PCOS BECAUSE there are safer, better pills available. Dianette is supposedly good for excess hair and acne, but not everybody gets good results with it (myself included).
I would go to another doctor and demand Yasmin if you want to try it. If you are ok to be prescribed Dianette, I don't see why you couldn't have Yasmin. I believe it is due to the cost on the NHS. Doctors are too obsessed with money rather than curing/helping their patients!
