I was switching back and forth between bcp and progestin to control my PCOS for many years. When we decided to ttc, I stopped the bcp (obviously). My periods were still very irregular, and I was using the progestin if I went more than a few months. We didn't conceive for two years, so my ob/gyn's next plan was the metformin. I began ovulating, and she said it was possible that I had never ovulated before. My cycles went from whenever, to 60 days, to 35 days, to pg. My doc has never talked about using the met otherwise, though. She seems content to just do the progestin when needed, unless I am ttc. I am not obese or having any pre-diabetic symptoms, so that may factor in. I think some of the issue is that the metformin treatment is so new. If you are ttc, I definitely recommend it. Even if you are not, it's great for regulating your O and has helped my skin tremendously, more than bcp ever did. I'd talk to your doctor!
