I've been on Glumetza (the slow-release metformin) for one week now. I asked my doc the same questions b/c generic is less than 1/2 the cost. She said she wouldn't prescribe gen. metformin since the cost is not worth potentially worse side effects. From what I've read online, generic metformin does cause more/stronger side effects of gas/nausea/diahrrea/stomach upset. Not to share tmi, but I have experienced more gas and looser stool on just 500mg/day, and would not want to have worse side effects than that. I think it was/is worth the extended release or 'brand name' drug for me. I increase my dose tonight, so will see how it goes in the next few days. |
