It's always best to put statements like this into context. There's a big difference between someone who runs (for example) 2 miles a day vs someone who runs 10 miles a day. Both could call themselves 'avid runners', but the impact on the body could still be very different.
While there's no reason to doubt your doctor's advice as it applies to you, I don't know that it would be wise to apply it to everyone.
