Default 19 with lots of questions

Hi- I'm 19 and was dx about 3 days ago--- I am about normal weight for my height (143, 5 foot 6) and don't have hair problems----> is there any correlation between obesity and hair problems? Are thinner people less likely to get them? Should I start the low-carb diet right now to prevent obesity? Is there some sort of test I can take to find out if obesity will be in my future? Any help would be great. . . .

I am 5'5" and before I became PG I was about 125 lbs. I have no problems with the hair on my head, but I do have excess hair issues elsewhere. Not sure if there is any connection between obesity and hair problems.

As for the low-carb diet, I was approximating "The Zone" for a while and it made me feel great! I had more energy. I don't think there is anyway to predict your future weight (I suppose looking at close relatives might give you a hint?), but eating properly can't hurt. I would be hesitant to go on something as strict as Atkins, unless there is a clear need, but you might want to try something more moderate like The Zone just to see how it makes you feel.

Welcome to SoulCysters. I hope you find lots of opportunities to learn and share here.

Good luck!

I think there is a correlation between excess weight and excess hair. In fact when I lost weight all my symptoms improved though did not disappear.

I think the theory is something like the more excess weight you have on your body the more oestrogen you produce and excess oestogen is converted to testesterone... hence could lead to excess hair problems etc.

I certainly think it is a good idea to eat sensibly.

Default Obesity & hair problems

Hi. There is a correlation between obesity and hair problems. This is what I remember from my research:

Having insulin-resistance increases your body's drive to store fat. Higher levels of insulin leads to less sex-hormone-binding-globulin (SHBG) being produced. It's SHBG that binds to any free (unbound) testosterone in your bloodstream. Because there's less SHBG, there is more free testosterone. It's the free testosterone that causes problems like excess body hair, male-pattern baldness and acne. Being overweight makes any tendency to insulin resistance worse, which makes the SHBG and free testosterone problem worse...vicious cycle! Hope that makes some kind of sense....it does for me but I'm not sure how well I explain it. Basically, being overweight makes the all the symptoms worse.

That said, it still doesn't seem so cut and dried, because I am not overweight but I do have some of the problems of too much free testosterone.

This is such a complex condition, isn't it?
