Default 1st GYN appt.. nervous..

im not sure where this post belongs... but anyways

i have my first GYN appt on march 12th. im pretty nervous even though i know why im there. i dont really have anyone to talk to about this besides all of you ladies on here.. what kinds of questions do i ask and what should i expect?

here is some background on me incase it will help clarify..

i am 18 4'11'' and about 179lbs. as far as i know it runs in my family. my mom had a hysterectomy about 2 years ago when she was 34. i have been told that my biological grandmother and some aunts have had them too around the same age into their early 40's. i know that they will want to know that. what other things do you think they will need?

i know this is a lot of rambling, sorry, but im really confused and such..

HELP!
thank you.

I know how you feel. It took me til age 22 to get myself to walk into a gyno office. For myself it was mainly an issue of denial of what was going on with me. Are you having symptoms or is this just a routine checkup b/c of a family history?

I chose a nurse practitioner (who has her MS in advanced women's health) at the OB-GYN practice because I knew that most of the time doctors are busy with hospital calls for post-surgical patients (such as hysterectomies) or patients who are in labor, etc. The nurse practitioner where I go sees patients in the office and does not deal with OB patients. I was very thankful that I went to see a NP b/c she took the time to listen to what was going on and answered all of my questions. We probably spent an hour just talking. My friend on the other hand had went to see an actual doctor and waited 2 hr past appt time and the doctor only spent about 5 min with her answering questions.

The best advice I can give you is to already have questions ready and bring them written down with you. Also, any symptoms you are experiencing and concerns you might have. Make the doctor listen to you! If they try to cut you short, don't let them, this is your oppurtunity to let them know whats going on!

Things to report:
1) Symptoms you are having...
2) Family history (specific relationship to you...mother, aunt, cousin)
3) Menstrual Cycle (frequency and duration...though they'll ask this anyway)

Things to ask:
1) What are the symptoms of PCOS?
2) How are you sure I have PCOS? (sometimes but rarely this could be Cushings) they will probably do a vast number of diff. types of blood tests and sometimes a vag. ultrasound
3) What are ways to manage PCOS?
4) Will I have to take medications?
5) What are the different types of medications?
6) What type of diet and exercise program?
7) What are the complications to PCOS?
(these are just some quick questions I could think of...)

As far as the exam, just take a few deep breaths. The exam lasts probably less than 2 minutes.

Have FACTS ready.

Do you have periods at all?
Are they regular?
If they're regular, how frequently?
If not regular, then when did you have the last few?

Do you have more facial and body hair than average?
How much?

If you've facial hair, how do you remove it?
If you shave it, I would seriously suggest not removing it from now to the appointment and then they can assess by the growth in that time how significant it is.
