Default 1st ultrasound at 18 weeks - is that std?

For some reason I always thought it was 12 weeks, but I'm going thru the public system here in Victoria & they said the 1st ultrasound is not until 18 weeks.
I did have an ultrasound at 6 weeks 3 days because of bleeding.
Just wondering if this is standard?
Thanks!

Hi Jane, that's standard as far as I know, particularly for the public system. That is what it is up here in Qld. Good luck!
Donna.

Congrats on your pregnacy! And Yes here in NSW too, its the norm for the first u/s to be at 18weeks (again thru public system). If you really want one at 12weeks you can ask your ob or gp for a referral and pay for one at a private radiology clinic (you do get some of it back I think). I just waited, it was a long wait mind you, but worth it!

All the best

Yeah, ummm things seem to have changed in Victoria of recent years - back when the dinosaurs roamed (ie, when I went through my pregnancies, in the early 1990's) I had ultrasounds at 12 weeks and 18 weeks.

but, my SIL who is having her 2nd pregnancy (making the kiddos about 16 months apart) has only had one ultrasound per pregnancy - both around 18 weeks. She is attending a clinic attached to the Northern Hosptial somewhere near Morang in Melbourne.

also, my sister is currently pregnant (with her first) , she has as far as I know had only one ultrasound done - in the pic it said she was 16 weeks.

I had one at 13 week but I wasn't going through the public system. It was the neuchal screening (downs syndrome). This was optional only - my ob/gyn said I did not have to have it done - we did mostly to get a sneak peek at the baby. You could always ask about it and see what they say. It has to be done no later than 13 - 14 weeks - later than that and they baby is too big to do the check (fluid on the back of the neck).

Thanks ladies!
At least I've seen the heartbeat at 6 weeks 3 days, I can't imagine waiting for 18 weeks before seeing anything.
I kept thinking that I would see the ultrasound at 12 weeks and if all was okay I'd tell people. Because its a surprise (but much wanted) pregnancy, I was drinking up until 6 weeks, and I'm terrified I've done something to the little darling.
We haven't told anyone yet, but I'm thinking I will still wait until 12 weeks.

Try not to worry about drinking before finding out - many ppl do not know that early... and i am pretty sure that they don't absorb anything from your blood stream for a couple of weeks. My mums works in a methadone clinic... and she sees her clients produce many healthy babies under all kinds of conditions - that is what she kept reminding me when I wouldn't eat certain things when I was pg.
