I am a thin cyster with impaired insulin response and a mild fatty liver. My dr. prescribed 1,000mg 2x's a day (of metformin). Is that dose too high? It seems that most girls build up to (about) 1,500mg per day?
I started on 500 mg a day for a week then moved up to 1000 mg/day (500 twice a day). After a month or so on that I had my blood tested and based on the bloodwork the doc decided to move me to 1500 mg/day. After 2 months on that I just got tested again and will have a visit with my doc Aug 1 to discuss the results.
I think if you start at 2000 mg/day you might experience bad GI side effects. I would slowly taper it up. I had to go on the XR at 1500 mg because of side effects, I was fine at 1000 mg but 1500 mg of regular met caused too many GI problems. You might want to ask your pharmacist about this as well as your doctor.
My specialist didn't want me on more than 1000mg because he said since I was thin I didn't need more (even though I am IR). But 1000mg didn't do anything for me (for my cycles, for ovulation - it did other stuff - see below about my boobies!!). Now I'm waiting to see if 1500mg does.
Love,
Michelle

dx mar 06 PCOS/IR - 2000mg Metformin, multivitamin, B12, chromium, fish oil
dx may 06 male factor - Y chromosome microdeletion and chronic abacterial prostatitis
dx may 07 depression (but suffered throughout my teens) - 50mg Zoloft
tried Clomid (100mg) last year
now waiting for the results of DH's prostatitis treatment ....
the first time i took met i was suppose to start at 2000 but i took it upon myself to start at a lower dose and gradually go higher. I think the most cysters take 1500 and higher regardless of the weight. Good luck!

Unlike a lot of meds, weight is NOT an issue in determining your dose of metformin. Thin-ness is irrelevant on the drug...dose is determined by how hard your hormones are to move and how far they are from normal.
That dose does seem high to start, but I would ask your Dr about dosing up slowly. Women here who eat well and dose up slowly have way less GI issues than those who just start cold turkey. I can vouvh...my Doc started me at 1500 mg and I suffered. Admitedly though, a big part of my problem was being un-willing to get serious about my diet at first. You'll save yourself a lot of grief if you eat to control your insulin.
