2 in one- HCG timing affects PCOS IVF success&Breastfed infants 'unharmed' by HCG timing affects PCOS IVF success
There was also good news for women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) this week, as researchers found that changing the timing of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) stimulation could increase the chance of successful IVF in such patients.
Eda Vrtacnik Bokal and co-workers from the University Medical Centre Ljubljana in Slovenia studied 20 patients with PCOS undergoing IVF treatment. They found that those in whom oocytes were retrieved 38 hours after hCG administration showed better follicular maturation, oocyte quality, and embryo quality than those who underwent retrieval 4 hours earlier.
The findings are particularly important as in patients with PCOS, "the oocytes retrieved from stimulated cycles are often immature, and of low quality and low fertilization competence," the researchers note. Breastfed infants 'unharmed' by metformin
In other news, US study findings have allayed concerns that mothers taking the diabetes drug metformin could pass on dangerous amounts of the drug to their child while breastfeeding.
The study of five breastfeeding mothers, who were taking 500 mg of metformin twice daily, demonstrated that the estimated dose of the drug ingested by the nursing infant was 1 percent or less of the mother's weight-adjusted dose, which is not considered to be clinically significant. Moreover, no significant impact on the blood glucose levels of the infants was observed.
"Although additional data are required, we conclude that metformin is compatible with breastfeeding," say Gerald Briggs (Miller Children's Hospital, Long Beach, California) and co-authors.
