I take right now I take 1000 mg of glucophage in the evening with dinner and I need to increase the dose to 2000 mg per day. Would your recommend taking the entire 2000 mg at dinner? Or should I take 1000 mg with breakfast and 1000 mg with dinner? The prescription bottle just says 2000 mg per day.
I currently take 2000mg of the Fortamet ER (which one of the name brand for the Glucophage ER). I take both of my pills at night, but it doesn't hit my system all at once. I like it because I can sleep through the symptoms. If your Dr. didn't specify an exact time it is basically going to be trial and error until you find what's best for your system to adjust to. Good Luck!

The more you spread out the dose, the easier it will be on your body (and in temr sof side effects!. I suggest either 1000 mg twice a day. OR take 1000 mg with your biggest meal (say supper) and then 500 at brekafast and 500 at lunch.
You can't take it all together unless you're on the extended release version of the drug...taking it all at once will likely make you totally ill on the regular version and drop your sugars way too low.
Hope it helps!

Thanks! My pills are in 1000 tablets so I guess tomorrow morning I'll start taking the other 1000 mg tablet with breakfast. Since these aren't the XR pills, I wonder if I could cut them in half and take 500 at breakfast and 500 at lunch?
when I was started on Metformin by my endo, he made me spread it out with meals. He started me on 1000 mgs at first and worked me up to 2000mg. I take 1000 with breakfast and 1000 with my last meal or with a snack at bedtime. But I am type 2 and he wants me to spread it out during the day to help control my blood sugars. If you are type 2 its best to take it once in the morning and once at night. I have found that if I don't take it with dairy products, it helps with symptoms. I have been on metformin since August of last year and I still have problems when I take it after drinking milk. Even if I drink the milk upto 2 hours before I take it. I have found it helps to take it right after I eat something. I hope this helps.

I take 1000mg in the morning with breakfast and my other meds, around 9am. Then when I get home from the day, around 6pm I take the other 1000mg, right before or after supper. Works well for me, as long as I take it just before or after a meal and not in between.
Now today I messed up because I was off work and took my second dose around 1pm and it has had me sick with low sugar all day, big mistake, not sure what I was thinking!

You may want to consult your dr or pharmicist before cutting them in half....I may be wrong but I think they are time released and I've read that it isn't a good idea to cut time released pills in half.....like I said, I could be wrong, but you may want to check it out before hand.
I only take 1000 mg a day and I take mine at dinner or close to bedtime.
Good luck to you!!

Boo, she is on the regular version of met, not the Xr, so cutting them is fine.
But I would get Dr approval.

I would take them at different times at least morning and night. Im taking 1000mg at night but i take XR .Have you spoken to your DR about using the XR version as its alot easier to take (once a day) and generally dosent have as many side effects (stomach upsets) .
All the best

Just my two cents! I was orginally taking my 2000mg spread out over three meals (500mg at breakfast, 750mg at lunch and dinner) and felt really sick and tired. I've recently switched and started taking 1000mg in the am with breakfast and 1000mg at dinner and have felt much better! Coincidence.... I'll never know but I actually like just taking them twice a day rather than three times a day. HTH.

When I was just on 1000mg I took it all at night so I would sleep through the side effects. Now that I am up to 2000mg I am taking 1000mg in the morning and 1000mg at night. There is no way I could take it at lunch I need some break from the side effects during the middle of the day.
Thanks for all the info. I took 1000 mg this morning with breakfast -- so far, so good. If this works, I won't worry about splitting the pill to take with breakfast & lunch.
