I just re-started BCPs after being off meds for my PCOS for a while. I was just recently put on a generic version of Lo/Ovral.. the label says "Low-Ogestrel."
Anyway, I began them Dec. 30, a Sunday, when I began spotting.
I have been on my period now for 24 days. The first week was just a lot of spotting and a little bit of blood. I thought to myself, "What is taking so long? Why isn't it starting?" Then the second and third weeks were light bleeding, but not as heavy as my periods usually are, which was fine with me. Now on this 4th week, it's getting heavy. I have to wonder if there's an end in sight.
Is this just the pills regulating themselves in this whacked-out body of mine? My feeling is that I should wait it out another week or two before I call the doctor. Because I have the feeling it's just my hormones regulating, things lining themselves back up into place, etc. (Because off meds, my periods are quite irregular normally, and they are heavy when I DO get them.)
And BTW, yes, I have noticed severe mood swings and down feelings myself.
The same thing happened to me on Lo-Ovral, and after a few months it regulated itself. To be fair, the same thing happens to me on every pill I try for the first three months -- usually not heavy except for a few days, but some kind of spotting every day or almost every day. After about three months, it goes to normal, and then I hardly ever bleed significantly at all. I do think it's the body trying to regulate itself and adjust to the hormones. I think most doctors will tell you to wait it out a bit unless there's something very drastic going on. My doctor told me that this initial spotting/bleeding is relatively common.
Watch the mood swings though -- for me, some of those are worse than others depending on the pill. If they're really bad in the beginning, those probably only get worse on that particular pill. I can't remember whether Lo-Ovral was the one that made me feel like I was underwater all the time or the one that was the best of the bunch and actually had no emotional side effects until about five or six months out. (I eventually have problems on all pills)

I was on Lo/Ovral once before and I don't remember this happening. I was on the name-brand kind at the time.
This time, it's a generic brand. I wouldn't think that would make a difference.
It's more annoying than alarming at the moment. This is the 25th day, and the heaviest day yet. And this is the first day I've been cramping. I don't usually cramp anyway. Hopefully this is the peak of everything and the flood will finally start dying down. hehe
I'll just go with my instincts, I guess. If it stops soon, I'll wait until next time, and if it happens again next time I'll call. Or, if I am still bleeding two weeks from now, I'm definitely calling.
