3 m/c's - are they due to high IR, PCOS & hashimotos?
Hi Ladies,
I'm new to this board & need some help. I've had 2 losses, 1 at 16 weeks & 2nd at 10 weeks(blighted ovum) & now I'm pending my 3rd loss(they found a h/b at 7 week US but at 9 week U/S it was gone & baby measured 12 days small). I self diagnosed myself of possible PCOS, high IR(26) & hashimotos(high anti-thryoid antibodies level of 432). I asked RE to give Rx for 1500 mg metformin, synthroid & baby aspirin 2 months before getting pg so I was only on the meds 2 months. I took it while I was pg so in total it's been 4 months so far on the meds. Do you think being on it only 2 months before getting pg wasn't enough so that's why it resulted in a m/c now? Why do I keep having m/c's like this? I just don't understand. I'm 30 pounds overweight & eat alot of carbs & I know that is a big problem with high IR but still I never thought it would result in 3 m/c's in a row - it just seems too much. DH & I are longing for a baby badly. RE's just aren't doing enough. Maybe it's my own fault for not losing weight & cutting the carbs & taking the meds long enough.
Sheri,
I answered on the pregnancy board too, but I just have to answer you here too because of how you phrased your question. This is not your fault. It always feels like it is, but it's not. There are smokers, drug users, plenty of gals who eat like crap, and people who have terribly unhealthy lifestyles who carry to term. What we have going here is an involuntary hormone imbalance. We can work to correct it, but it never goes away, and we didn't cause it. Yes, losing some of your extra pounds by lowering your carbs might help overall, but that might not be the answer to these losses. I don't know why it keeps happening, and unfortunately the doctors don't either. It's just a terrible and enormous question mark.
Please take good care of yourself for now, and hang in there,
((More Hugs))
Sheri

{{{{HUGS}}}} I have had 4 m/c's & there still isn't a reason as to why. I have had some RPL Testing & all has come back normal so far. Basically, there is no way to know what caused the m/c's unless you get RPL Testing which you could get now due to 3 losses.
Remember, this is not your fault & no matter what you did you didn't do anything wrong.
I'm so sorry...{{{{HUGS}}}}

I have taken the natural killer cell assay & it was normal & I have been very aggressive after my 1st loss cuz' I just wasn't wiling to accept a loss at 16 weeks & let it go so I went to a high risk OB & about 3-4 different RE's & got 41 different tests & these are tests they normally wouldn't do until one has had 3 or more losses but I pushed to get them. The only tests I didn't get are some of the ones offered by Dr Coulam(Inciid website) cuz' they cost about $2K & one of her suggested solutions(IVIg) is a questionable treatment. Anyway my progesterone is normal. I got the P4 test prior to my pg many cycles & after my pg it was also normal at 53 cuz' I got pg with Clomid. I was going to get tested again for it at 9 weeks to see where it was but I found I was going to m/c.
So it seems at this point only thing that stands out is the high IR & hashimotos & PCOS. Hopefully RE will agree in my conclusion & tell me I didn't take my meds long enough & need to lower carbs. I will take these two steps before next time & hope to achieve a successful pg. I wish you ladies all the luck & God bless.
IVIg is very controversial but it's worked for lots & lots of woman. That may be my next step as well. I was afraid to do it but I personally know someone that is doing it now...she's 13 wks pg & the only reason why she didn't m/c'ry was b/c of the IVIg treatments. I think there does come a point when you just need to do anything to keep the pg or you never will....that's where DH & I are at right now.
Make sure you have you IR (w/ metformin & diet), Hashimoto's Disease (meds, etc), & PCOS under control before you TTC again. Basically, if you've already had all this testing done & it's all normal this is the only way you can have even some hope that you won't m/c again.
It does seem to me that 2 months is long enough for the meds to be in your system but your dr may have other suggestions. I can tell you that I was IR (so bad that I was a few points from being Type II diabetic) but controlled my levels w/ diet (I'm metformin-resistant so I can't take it b/c it doesn't work for me). I now am not close to Type II diabetic & I'm not even IR anymore...got that way w/in 6 months of finding out my test results so it is possible to reverse IR.
Good Luck!
