I would guess I am a type 4 -
Although newly diagnosed. I always thought my symptoms were related to my thyroid issues, but it may have been PCOS all along. I didn't have trouble conceiving with my two children, so I must have ovulated. I also had problems with heavy periods. I have very bad cholesterol. I do have problems with facial hair and Insulin Resistance. I used to be very thin until I had a thyroid nodule removed in '95 - gained 80 pounds in 5 years and stayed around 200 for 9 years now. Dr. put me on metphormin 1000 mg and then will increase in a few weeks. I hope this helps. I was tested for cushings in 97 but came back normal. Exercise and diet never helped with weight except for when I did the Atkins about 8 years ago. I dropped 15 pounds but then found out I was pregnant with dd, so I stopped. I am thinking about the IR diet.

Red face questions!

hmm well i guess i'd be a 3. i was dx apr. 09. so im fairly new. havent had a menses for 10 yrs. i married this yr in jan. and we were hopin to get preggars. so im a lil nervous as to where i stand with that. been on on 1500 met for about 2 months. how long does it usually take to get your body used to it? and what is the next med after met/ is it clomid? what is the probability that it will work with met? are the results good? i knw every woman is different but im really anxious to know. my obgyn told me "when your ready to get pregnant come back and we'll start you on a combo" i was like wow is it that easy? how do you know when to start clomid if your not ovulating? when do you start it? wow that was a mouthful but i really am anxious to have a child. by the way i do have hp and pre-diabetes 2..i know i have to lose weight and maybe it will help kickstart the o'ing... any other suggestions?

Thank you, Cushiemama. I am going back to the doctor in September or October and I will get re-tested. I do have the "hump" or rounded shoulders. I don't have the dark stretchmarks anymore (well, I still do but they aren't purple anymore since I have stayed relatively the same weight for a while.) I still get bright purple spots on my hips that are like blood blisters or maybe the start of a new stretchmark. I'm going to ask about those, too. I did the 24 urine test in '97, but at that time, my symptoms were not as severe as now.

apparently I am a 1 because, despite having excess abdominal weight, my IR test came back normal (which doesn't seem right). my dr. would like me to stay on metformin anyway, which is really frustrating.

I'm a type 5. My only real symptoms were the hirsutism and being a little overweight, but most of it around my waist. I've been on 1000 met a day for almost a year and a half, but I've gained 11 pounds in the last 6 months, so I'm thinking it's not been that great for me.

I think I am most like #4, since I have Type 1 diabetes but also somewhat resistant to the insulin I take. However, I'm also overweight...

I've been on BCs so long that I don't even know how 'regular' my periods are... I think I'm a 3.

Thanks to the OP for that. Haven't read the article in depth but I'm either a type 1 or 5, depending how broad the definition of anovulatory is; for example I've regularly been 4 months without a period, but will then bleed for about 7-10 days and sometimes have another 7-10 days of bleeding less than a fortnight later.

I totally didn't even now that there were different types! I'm going to the endo this week so that would be a good point/question to bring up to him. Thanks!
