hello ! i have recently been diagnosed with pcos since trying to conceive. i was on bcp most of my life due to irregular periods but thought nothing of it. now, off bcp, my ovulation was coming later and later. went to an re who confirmed pcos with an ultrasound, fhs/lh ratio abnormality, and also having acne issues (proactiv is working wonders though !). last time ovulation took 47 days. so i was placed on 50 mg clomid and just found out yesterday it didn't take. my RE explained that women with pcos have a harder time on clomid and may need to go to injectables. i'm now on provera to start a new 100 mg clomid cycle. my question is, has anyone had success with increased dosage of clomid ? i weigh about 115 and am 5.4. i'm not insulant resistant and don't have any weight issues at all. do not struggle to keep wieght off, etc. so i'm just curious if i still have a chance or not. thanks !
Hi Dancegirl,
Is Clomid the only med you're taking? You have plenty of options - especially Metformin and Spironolactone. Clomid CAN work for PCOS women but it is more effective when taken with Metformin.
I have had only 1 round of Clomid - I ovulated on day 23 but didn't know it b/c were traveling overseas (messes with temps). I don't have IR, acne or obesity (wt 105) but I only ovulate once a year without meds. I think the Met + Spiron. is helping me and we are about to try Clomid again! I found it very stressful last time so will try to relax.
My doc told me of recent findings that women with PCOS often conceive in their first month after stopping BCP. She wanted me to take it for 3 months then come off but I hated the side effects.
Hello
I like you also went Clomid 50mg to 100mg, with great success. Although my Dr. at the time did not tell me that I had PCOS. I was not officially told I had PCOS until yesterday. As we are trying unsuccessfully to have another child. My Newest Gyn sprung that on me I was quite suprised seeing as the only diagnosis I had before was my bicornulate uterus. It does make alot more sense but he also told me yestereday that I would probably won't respond to Clomid this time. So now I go for blood work to find out if I am insulin resistant. I wish I had seen this new Dr 5 years ago! I feel like I am starting all over again. Thank God For my Son!
thanks brooke and jess ! jess, so did you first not O on the 50 mg but then did O on the 100 mg ? i'm starting to convince myself this is not going to happen for us. guess i'm setting up for failure so every month doesn't turn out like this. too much of a disappointment. did you doctor say why you probably wouldn't respond to clomid this time around ? so sorry about the diagnosis. it really stinks doesn't it ? brooke, my RE told me that metformin wouldn't help me as my insulin levels are fine. are you insulin resistant ? i did hear of the bcp option, so perhaps before we start taking the injections we'll try this. unfortuantely we didn't try my first month off (ovulated fine that month) b/c i was waiting for disability insurance to kick in. thanks for the advice girls !
According to my OPKs I did O, but according to my dr I didn't. In fact he called me into his office after the last month at 100mg and told me i would have to see a RE. I was devistated and decided to wait until after the holidays to see a RE and lo and behold the whole time I sat in the drs office and he told me he couldn't help me I was PG! It took me 2 months to find the nerve to buy a PGT I thought I just missed my periods b/c of stress. My new Dr doesn't think i will respond to the clomid this time because of my weight and my age!!! Yeah I like to eat!!! And He seemed to be leary of it b/c I was on clomid so long the first time. I was on Clomid for 7 months. I don't think he wants to risk me going on it again for any length of time. Good Luck!
Hey girls! Jess - so sorry you have to be here but I hope that you can now find some answers!
Dancegirl - Don't worry honey, there are so many options in front of you - eventually you will get the right combo and have success! I'm praying the same for me. A lot of the meds take 3 to 6 months to really start working. It will happen in time. At least we don't have weight problems, too - I imagine it would be much more complicated to have to lose weight on top of all this.
I have not been tested for IR. I know I should, but I don't think I have that problem. However, I know that I produce more insulin than I should because my blood sugar swings from high to low all the time. I don't have to see the blood work to know that! I do try to eat a low GI diet. Still, my doc was happy to try metformin because she had seen results with it in the absence of IR. It but it seems to help my blood sugar levels AND I know I ovulated once in the past 4 months (as opposed to once a year).
In some ways I am relieved not to get periods - the one month that we tried clomid I was devastated to get my period. At least I don't have that regular disappointment! Still, if I'm going to get pregnant I need to start ovulating!
