Angry 7 months of AF ~ Milena IUD ~ endometrial ablation options...

I'm currently in my 7th month of bleeding. I'm not a newbie to prolonged bleeds, but I've been doing this 1997. Old doc's remedy was a D&C and "come back when it happens again."

Just found a new doctor who comes highly recommended, knows about PCOS (thank GOD!), etc. who has recommended a D&C, a Mirena IUD, and an endometrial ablation.

After researching my options, I think this combination is the best way to go. Anyone else in the same predicament? I'm curious how the Mirena IUD worked after an ablation and, how long did it take you to recover from the ablation? That part scares me more than anything, I think, although I do believe it's the best option for me.

Thanks in advance,
Karen

Curious, as I have long bleeds but have never had a recommendation for IUD or ablation, what are they? I was never even given the option of D&C as a first choice, rather I was just given Provera for 5 days to start a "real" period and then I would continue on to being normal for me for about a year, until the last year.

How was your reaction to provera?

I was put on Provera in September of 2001 to promote a "real period" (after having a "fake period" for 5 months straight) and it was awful... It was 100+ degrees outside but I was inside, in my sweats, in bed, with every blanket I owned, on the phone with the doctor... I bled so hard that I went through an Always Overnight pad about every 90 minutes... Then I was put on bcp's 3x a day for 3 weeks -- didn't do a thing.

I don't respond to Provera, birth control pills, etc. The only that has ended my prolonged periods is a D&C and I've had a few since 1997.

My doctor suggested the Mirena IUD which is in for five years, and gives off a small amount of hormones (progesterone) to help even me out a bit... An endometrial ablation is where they burn/damage/destroy the endometrial lining of your uterus. It's not something to do if you still hope to get pregnant, as once the lining is gone, it's a done deal. It can grow back, but most times the ablation damages the lining for good. And, even if a small part grows back, you are not advised to get pregnant.

We adopted our son last December, so losing what was left of my fertility -- which wasn't much to begin with -- isn't that big of a deal. Sure, it's a big deal, but when I consider that leaving everything as is opens me up, big time, to endometrial cancer, I'm happy to show it the door....

Well, my reaction tot he provera was normal-heavy bleeding for about 6 or 7 days (which is normal for me). I had cramps and nausea (normal too) and uncontrollable moods. Dh said "NEVER AGAIN". LOL, I have gone through it 2 times, but they were over 2 years ago. I just felt aweful, kinda like when I had my miscarriages. I didn't have the cold feeling. Just layed around in bed sleeping and watching tv until I felt better.

I have been trying to control the lengthy ones by using herbs. I started out with Vitex, it worked the first month. Then the second time, I used NPC (Natural Progesterone Cream). When I started to spot, I would immediately use the cream for about 3 days then quit and I would have a "real" period. It worked for the last few months, then in the end of June, it came and I haven't been successful at losing it. I am just now starting to get a normal bleed. It has been 3 weeks now, so hoping it will be over in a few days.

I hope the treatment works out great for you and keep us posted. It might be something I will want to discuss with a doc (when I find one my insurance will pay).
