I went on e-bay and found this great magnetic bumper thingy which advertised PCOS and awareness about it. It benefitted PCOS research. I bought one (it was like $3) and put it on my car. The next morning I found it missing, and was screamed at by my mother and told that that isn't something to "advertise" and I should be ashamed of myself.
Penny for your thoughts?

Well, you could flip off your mother and curse her and tell her to .........
No, never mind, that won't work, but it's tempting, isn't it?
You'll have to use this as a moment to educate.
I can almost see where she is coming from, because I am of an age, 45, where I know that people my age and older often thought you were supposed to feel a sense of shame when discussing "woman problems" and especially problems that might lead to infertility.
In my own case, even though my PCOS was diagnosed when I was seven, my parents were so upset and reticent to even think about such issues that they never even told me about it! I found out on my own when I was 30! That's practically a crime! And I didn't speak to my mom for many months after I found out she could have given me information and gotten me treatment earlier!
But that attitude needs to change!! Back then, all people knew was the syndrome had something to do with ovaries, with periods, with fertility....all those things would have been so hush-hush, and you'd never have a bumper sticker advertising it!!!!!!
But now we know that PCOS is an endocrine disorder that isn't reproductive in origin. It is a syndrome that affects your whole body, it just has an unfortunate name with the word ovary in it. Frankly, I think we need to find a new name for the whole thing.
There is nothing to be ashamed of here. You be guided by your personal level of comfort in whether you are open to discussing it, or wearing a tee shift, or having something on your car. The more we can be open and frank about it, the more awareness there is, and the more progress we can make toward dealing with it. I mean, just look at breast cancer awareness. I can remember a time in my own life when it was hush hush, and thought to be something embarassing or shameful. Now, we have pink ribbons and 10K races, and no one is ashamed to talk about it!!
Try to tell you Mom this reasonably. And then, if that doesn't work, you slap her for me, OK?
(Only kidding.)

Haha if you knew my mother I think you would have just told me to slap her.:-P But thanks, I guess it didn't occur to me to think that way.

You should tell your mother that this "advertising" as she calls it is one of the only ways to get the word out about PCOS so that others are diagnosed. It should be recognised. It's a serious condition. If they can have ribbons for every other medical condition known to man on cars and if your mother doesn't mind seeing those, she shouldn't mind a ribbon for PCOS. There's nothing wrong with letting people know. It informs them, and maybe they'll be able to spread that knowledge to people who have the condition and have not been diagnosed. You should tell your mother that you love her, but that you're an adult and that you should be able to decide what you "advertise" on your car.

Wow- Just because SHE knows you have it, doesn't mean the rest of the world does. I have a Breast Cancer ribbon on mine out of a reminder that my dad died because of it. Yes BC is generally a female problem-- But it happens. The more people are aware of an illness the more likely it can be detected and treated in its earlier stages. See if your mom will agree to let you have it back on your car if you just talk about it as supporting your friends. Sometimes it takes an indirect route.

I have to be honest i don't like your mom. I thinks she's and inconsiderite twit. I think she's got her head so far up something she can't even see the forest for the trees.
Maybe because she's not dealing with this or thinks it something to be shamefull of, she took it. Which would be rude jus the same.
Bottom line is this, we have to get the word out. Hell be my guest to tell your mom i'm a proud women to have this syndrome. And i'm doing a report and oral report in class on tuesday for pcos. I've got one classmate in my class who thinks she has it, and nother who thinks her cusion has it. The family members of that cuision think she's just dirty.
Your mom needs her head examined

How sad of your mother to think it is something shameful. I had never even heard of PCOS until I was diagnosed last year!! How sad is that??!!! I wish I had before then.

If it is your car then she has no right to take anything off it! It's not like you had some sort of racist slogan or anything offensive on there and you didn't stick it to her car. I would be totally pissed and demand that she give it back!
i wish i had known about pcos before i got diagnosied with it it might have made it easier for me and not kept me away from the doctor for sooooo long and i could have started the treatment way before now

i agree with canadianmutation... she doesn't need to know that it is for you, you can support friends. i remember in junior high school, one of my friends had hodgeskin's and i supported her all the way but my mom is a very old fashioned sicilian lady and she was not having it. but as time went on i guess she understood a little more. Now she can't say anything because i am married. talk to her, maybe she will understand. What i would do it go buy another one and stick it on. LOL
