Default A1c levels? Is a 6 ok?

Hello again Ladies,

I just got the call from the RE's office and all of my bloodwork came back good except they said my A1C is slightly elevated at 6. She told me that 5.9 is still in normal ranges.

Is that bad? I have an appt monday with my RE, but I was thinking on 2500mg daily of glucophage ER maybe that is too high.

Please let me know what you think

Thanks!!!

I really think it's fine. Different labs, doctor's offices, and hospitals have different lab values. All the doctors I have ever talked to have said as long as it's 6 or below, you're good.

Anything below 6 is normal. Anything below 7 is super control for a diabetic and some normal folks. 5.9 is way way normal. I have a 15.1, yes, you read that right, and though I was recently very sick, I am doing well and bringing it down. So you'd have a ways to go before you were in any trouble even if you were above 6!! Here is the website/article that the american diabetes association references: http://clinical.diabetesjournals.org...nt/full/24/1/9

Thanks! Recently I haven't been feeling well and my RE did a bunch of tests to make sure I don't have diabetes. My fasting blood sugar was 92 and all my other tests were normal. The only thing "slightly" elevated was the a1c (according to my nurse)

I know I can develop diabetes, but the longer I hold off the diabetes the better.

Thanks for the info!

Over here in the UK they like it to be below 7, my last one in June was over 10 not good at all so I am now in the process of changing a lot of things in order to avoid Insulin!

I wasnt seen officially until three months after leaving leaving hospital after being taken into hospital with a blood sugar level of 15.9 ish and +++ ketones.
When I had my first Hba1c I was at 6.4 and they said that that is fabulous for a regular person but as we are planning a pregnancy, they wanted me at 6.1.
The next time I was 6.5 and then 6.1 and a week or so ago I hit 6.0, which is fantastic.
Im concerned at the moment because my day to day readings are rising again, I see the specialists again on July 30th and we'll see what going on.
6 is fantastic though, good on ya.

I think that is great! The only thing that concerns me is that it is that good with the met so if you were not on it how would your levels be? I guess I am wondering if you are an actual diabetic? Have you posed that question to you Dr.?

Sandra,

Those are my thoughts exactly. I would think that it would be on the low side instead of slightly elevated. (the labs normal was 5.9). I am taking the maximum dose of met. (2500mg er )

I go see my RE tomorrow to talk about my results and where we go next. I have possible tubal issues too and he wants to do a repeat HSG.

I will let you ladies know what my RE thinks abut me being diabetic. Thanks for all of your responses!

I am wondering if they will have you stop your met for a few days, most typically 3 , and then have you go for a glucose tolerance test, the 3 hour fasting? I would probably ask for that if I were you. I hope your Dr. work with you and that you don't have it, but if you do that you get the proper treatment. I will look out for an update and good luck.

Your doctor wont put you up one more dosage?
Im on 3000mg and thats not all because of the diabetes, it was more my gynae that pushed for the top dosage and the diabetic clinic agreed to it.

Maybe in it is because I am in the US. He told me the maximum dose they recommend is 2500mg. And that is more than my last RE. I go this morning, so hopefully it will go well. Last time, I left the office and sobbed all day. And it wasn't because my RE was mean, he just gave it to me straight. And sometimes the truth hurts you know? He thinks my tubes are blocked and I need to do ivf. My insurance doesn't cover ivf and I cannot afford ivf. But he won't know for sure without another HSG.

Maybe if he takes me off the glucohpage (met) for the HSG they can do a GTT too. I will let you ladies know when I get home how it turned out.

Thanks!!!

Well I went the the RE today. He wants me to see an endocrinologist. He said that in last April my A1c was 5.3 and I was not on the met then. So just to be safe I should look into it further. He said he would not worry about birth defects because of the good for diabetes A1c number.

Thank you for all of your help!

~Sarah

Actually, in the US, the max dose of met is 2750.... so you could technically take another 250mg .... glad you are being safe rather than sorry, but by most you are still normal..... :-) Don't lose hope on the tubes.... did you say you already had an hsg done?

Yeah. My RE said that my right tube looks twisted. The HSG gave me an infection. So..he suspects the infection did some damage. I wish I could sue the original doctors who ordered the HSG and didn't give me any antibiotics. But I couldn't prove that is why I got the infection (3 days after the HSG)

It also didn't help that my right ovary was the one to responded to meds.

Sorry to ramble on.

My RE wanted my A1C below 7. So yeah, different RE's have different opinions. I just wanted to add that if you had an infection when they tested your A1C that could make it elevated. I wish you all the best.
