Default Abdominal pain after discontinuing Metformin

Hi. I just found out I was pregnant last week. I had been taking 1500mg of Metformin until the nurse told me to stop taking it on Thursday. Since then, I have had two sleepless nights where I am getting this excruciating pain in my upper left abdominal area. Could this be my gallbladder? Should I have gradually come off the Metformin? The nurse told me to just stop taking it but I have been wondering if I should have ramped down and slowly lowered the dosage. Anyway, I am now so afraid to eat anything...I have also been getting indigestion and bad gas.

Also, I am really worried that this is going to continue and I don't know what to do. I am going to call the doctor tomorrow but I am really worried about this. I hope it doesn't cause me to lose the baby!

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

Jackie

I'm glad you are seeing your Dr, Jackie. Pain on Met is not normal and pain off Met is even stranger.

I hope it helps to ease your mind, but I had very weird abdominal pains with my first baby...they were so excruciating that they doubled me over in pain. My Dr examined me and determined it was just ligaments stretching. I hope that you can see your Dr soon and get it all cleared up.

Some Dr's keep their patients on Met during the pregnancies to prevent miscarriage and help with gestational diabetes. There are articles you can read on this here:

You and your little one are in my thoughts and prayers right now. Please keep us posted on how you are.

Thanks for your post Christy. I am still going to talk to my doctor tomorrow about the pains but my mother in law seems to think it is just acid. She said that since I only get it at night, and it is accompanied by heartburn, she thinks it is just acid. Tonight I am going to try to sleep propped up on pillows and see if that helps.

It could be the coming off Met so quickly combined with my body getting adjusted to the pregnancy hormones. At any rate, I am feeling better. Last night it was so bad I was crying and I thought my husband was going to have to take me to the hospital.

Today I ate very little..had two small pancakes with no syrup and no butter for breakfast; a bean burrito with no sauce or onions for lunch..and cream of wheat, 2 eggs and toast for dinner. Hopefully that is bland enough to keep my stomach settled tonight. If I don't have any problems tonight, I am going to eat similarly tomorrow except I'll add some milk and fruit. I was too afraid that fruits/veggies would give me gas and cause more pain!

Well, here's to hopefully a peaceful night! If these last two nights are any indicators for what my entire pregancy is going to be like..its going to be a long nine months!!!

Thanks again for the post!
