Default Abnormal Mammogram - Should I be concerned?

OK, here's the history: Had biopsy in 2/2003 - benign. Had follow up Mammograms and they were Ok; the last one, which was a year after biopsy was done, said there was something but not to be concerned that it was related to biopsy (it was scar tissue). Flash forward 3 yrs from last Mammogram, I now have calcifications near where my scar is. I have to go back in 6 months to see if there are any changes then go to a yearly vs every other year.

Do you know if this is normal?

My sister was diagnosed with Breast Cancer at 39, she has been free and clear for the past 8 1/2 years. Because of her history my Dr has me get Mammograms done at my age (35). My sister told me she had the same thing happen with the calcifications and had a biopsy, this time it was benign.

Just curious if this is normal or not.

Thanks,
Lana

They are watching the calcifications because they can cluster around cancer. However, some women just have calcifications and nothing else. I had a friend who had lots of calcification, and they scared her to death telling her it was very suspicious. It turned out to be nothing. Since they know your family history, they will be extra careful about watching you and reading your mammograms. My mother and grandmother had breast cancer (as well as numerous of my Mom's maternal cousins), and I started getting annual mammograms at age 35. For about 18 months I had to have one every six months because the mammogram was "not entirely normal". Then about two years ago, I had a mammogram and the letter they sent me that said it was NOT NORMAL several times. Thankfully the biopsy turned out to be benign. They called it a fibrocystic lesion.
