Default Abnormal pap results

On Aug 1st I had my first appointment with a gyno, and had my first pap smear. They called me today and told me that they got my results, and they were abnormal. Apparently the cells looked funny on the slide. They checked for HPV, but did not find that, thankfully. Anyway, I have to go back in 6 months to see if the cells still look weird. Does anyone know if this is something I should be worried about? I mean, how common is it for this to mean something serious? 6 months seems like a long time to wait.

Just wanna put my 2 cents in...When I was about 15 or 16 I had an abnormal pap and they wanted to do some kind procedure to me which sounded kinda scary but I was too afraid and never went back. I know that was stupid on my part but all of my other paps since then were all normal. From what I know sometimes an abnormal pap isnt a big deal and other times it is. I'm actually suprised that they are gonna wait 6 months for you to come back. Some of the other cyster may be able to help you out more than I can cause like I said, they wanted to do some procedure to me (wish I could remember the name) and I got scared and didnt go to the appointment. Good luck

Hi Kim

Here is a very helpful site http://www.womenshealthlondon.org.uk...al/cervab.html that should deal with any concerns you have.

I've had 2 abnormal smears. On my first one, I was booked in for a colposcopy that revealed I was CIN3. I had loop wire treatment to remove the affected part of my cervix. With my second abnormal smear, it was mild and I was pregnant. I was worried that it could develop into cancer while pregnant. My specialist assured me that often when the cell changes are mild, they can revert back to normal, particularly with the changes experienced during pregnancy, and if not, it takes around 5 years to develop from mild cell changes to cancer (there are 3 stages of pre-cancerous cells). Sure enough the abnormal cells disappeared of their own accord.

I know it's hard not to worry about it, but asking you to come back in 6 months is giving your body the possibility of healing itself without invasive treatment. Hang in there {{{hugs}}}.
