Default Abnormal PAP smear

My doctor called me today to say that my PAP smear was abnormal. She said they ran the HPV tests - came back negative and they will retest next year. Should I be concerned??? I have a diagnosis of PCOS for years and it just seems risky to wait another year. Any suggestions?

welcome to sc i had an abnormal smear test (pap) a few years back. But mine was abnormal cos there was blood on the sample. I had another test done about 2 months after the original test. But im in the uk, so it may be different here.

That's odd that it came back abnormal, and they want to wait a year to retest...

Nothing to be worried about...PLENTY of women have 'abnormal' paps. I think that every single one of mine has been 'abnormal', but I have to go back in for another test within a few weeks (that comes back normal...)

My last pap came back abnormal, but it was because there was blood on it and it showed inflammation. They told me to come back next year and to watch for signs of infection.

I'd ask "How was it abnormal?"
Because with mine they sent me a letter about it and when I came in again they told me about it to make sure I was aware of it, but that I shouldn't worry.

I think what they do for an abnormal pap depends completely on exactly what they mean by abnormal. Signs of inflammation, blood, etc can make it abnormal, but aren't generally anything to worry about immediately, more of a watch and wait thing.

I on the other hand had my first abnormal pap when I was 18, and found out it was due to HPV. I ended up with a colposcopy to biopsy the abnormal areas. I have had this twice throughout the years. Generally, after an abnormal pap due to HPV, my doc would have me come back in 3 months for another, and then if it was still abnormal go on to biopsy.

I would definitely ask exactly what was abnormal!
